The Issue

We call on the UK Government to mandate comprehensive diversity training in all hair and makeup qualifications, with a special focus on TV and Film industry training, ensuring every aspiring professional is equipped to work confidently with all skin tones and hair types.

The UK’s TV and Film industries are global leaders, showcasing stories from every culture and background. Yet, many hair and makeup training programs, especially those focused on TV and Film, lack mandatory education on working with diverse skin tones and hair textures. This leaves graduates unprepared for the realities of the industry, limits their career opportunities, and perpetuates exclusion and bias on screen and behind the scenes.

As a makeup and hair designer myself, I still see many artists struggling to create makeup looks or hair designs for clients with diverse skin tones and hair textures. This lack of training is a real barrier—not only to their careers but to the clients who deserve to be represented and celebrated authentically.

As the owner of Final Checks Academy CIC I know firsthand how vital it is for artists to master techniques that celebrate all types of beauty. By making diversity training a legal requirement in all hair and makeup qualifications—especially those tailored for TV and Film—we can:

Equip future professionals with the skills to serve every client and character authentically and respectfully.

Promote equality and challenge outdated beauty standards in media and fashion.

Raise the quality and relevance of beauty education nationwide.

Open doors to broader career opportunities for graduates in competitive industries.

We urge the UK Government to introduce legislation requiring all hair and makeup qualification providers, particularly those training for TV and Film, to include mandatory modules on diverse skin tones and hair types, supported by appropriate training materials and resources.
