The Issue

Every year, twice a year, we go through the ritual of adjusting our clocks for Daylight Saving Time (DST), only to endure the disruption in our natural rhythms and daily schedules. For many New Mexicans, this biannual switch represents not just a minor inconvenience but a significant disruption to health and wellbeing.

Imagine a winter spent in the vast open landscapes of New Mexico, where the sun kisses the horizon all too early, leaving us in darkness by late afternoon. The few precious daylight hours we have are often spent indoors, at work or school, gazing out windows as the sun shines apathetically on. Those with a love for outdoor activities find their time squeezed, having to rush before dusk settles in. Making DST the standard time year-round would dramatically extend those daylight hours, giving all of us more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and soak in the sunlight.

The benefits of permanent DST go beyond mere convenience. Extended daylight gives us more time to be outside, which research shows can improve mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, and it encourages physical activity, combating issues like obesity which affects a significant portion of our population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 31% of adults in New Mexico are classified as obese. Imagine how much impact an extra hour of daylight could have, giving us the chance to embrace an active lifestyle.

Moreover, studies indicate that daylight extends safe driving conditions, potentially reducing accidents that commonly occur in twilight or darkness. It can also lead to energy savings, albeit modest, as households spend less time relying on artificial lighting.

There are states like Arizona that have already successfully implemented a permanent standard time, showing us that this transition is neither unprecedented nor impractical. Legislators in New Mexico have raised discussions about this before, but without widespread community backing, change has been slow.

By signing this petition, you add your voice to a growing number of New Mexicans advocating for a simpler, healthier, and more sunshine-filled life. Let’s urge our state legislators to make Daylight Saving Time our permanent time standard and harness the benefits sunlight offers us. Sign the petition today to support brighter, healthier days ahead in New Mexico!
