It seems that Hollywood has mastered the 'craft' of cultural appropriation. The recent success of Denis Villeneuve's Sci-fi epic shows how the west steals the ideologies and culture of the east and twists them for their white hero narrative by introducing them as something 'alien' or 'exotic' or 'foreign'. While this may be true in an era where the west was vastly unfamiliar with the ways of life of the eastern countries, it certainly doesn't look good in the post globalisation era. It reflects poorly on the perceptive capabilities of the western creators and is outrageously disrespectful and offensive for the eastern audiences because their values and culture are being misrepresented and often showcased as inferior. It seems that nothing is stopping Hollywood from doing this repeatedly with each time it becoming more and more outrageous and on top that it is lauded with awards in the orginal 'fictional' category at events like the Oscars eg.Dune Part 1. This film use islamic nomenclature and clothing styles as well music and architecture to some extent to represent a fictional alien planet and create the vibe of something 'exotic' and this is disturbing because it uses all this to exemplify the white male messiah character trope that saves downtrodden coloured population. It is cultural appropriation of the worst kind. Because these elements are then imbued in the minds of the western population as 'alien' and eventually inhuman or not normal. It creates a rift between cultures and makes it difficult to accept one another because it makes us forget that these things actually exist on our planet. The very planet we all share and when the western populace experiences this in reality it makes it difficult for them to digest that this is also a way of HUMAN life therefore fueling hostility.

I feel the only way for the Hollywood industry to make up for its shameful actions in a diplomatic way is to call out the movies that use cultural appropriation as tools for their 'original stories' by announcing a sarcastic categories at the Oscars for 'Best cultural appropriation in a film' 

Even getting nominated in such a category would be enough to highlight the misrepresentation that such a film causes. 

This would actually bring about a harmony among the cultures of the east and the west in a rather peaceful and light-hearted but powerful way and showcase through mutual respect for another's culture and intentions to protect it from malpractice.
