🚦 Make Crahen Ave NE & Michigan St NE Safer: 58 Crashes in 10 Years—We Need a Traffic Signal Now
Hello neighbors and local leaders,
I’m relaunching this petition to urge Grand Rapids Township and Ada Township to install a traffic signal (or another serious safety improvement) at the intersection of Crahen Ave NE & Michigan St NE. Since I first opened this petition four years ago, the dangers at this crossing have only grown worse.
Police Crash Data (2015–2024)
According to the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts database, this single intersection has seen 58 crashes in the last 10 years:
2015 – 4
2016 – 5
2017 – 4
2018 – 4
2019 – 4
2020 – 6
2021 – 8
2022 – 6
2023 – 9
2024 – 8
That’s an average of nearly 6 crashes every year, with a noticeable upward trend in recent years. For 2025, I am still waiting for updated numbers from the Police Department.
Why crashes are increasing
The growth of nearby neighborhoods has led to more residents, more traffic, and more pedestrians using this intersection daily. Many drivers speed through without stopping or respecting crosswalks, creating an unsafe environment for families, children, and seniors.
Nearby Example of Safety Done Right
Just 200 feet away, the Orchard neighborhood benefits from a proper crosswalk to the MVP facility—showing that safe design is possible and effective. Crahen & Michigan deserves the same level of protection.
Our Call to Action
We are asking township leaders to:
Install a traffic light at Crahen Ave NE & Michigan St NE, or
At minimum, add a high-visibility pedestrian crosswalk with flashing beacons.
The numbers speak for themselves. Fifty-eight crashes in a decade is unacceptable. Please join us in signing this petition so that we can present a strong case at the next township board meeting.
Together, we can finally make Crahen & Michigan a safe intersection for everyone.
Thank you,
Paul Farb
