Church Street, a bustling hub in Montclair, New Jersey, currently allows vehicular traffic. We propose to transform this one-way section into a pedestrian-only zone to enhance the walkability and overall appeal of our town. Many other towns have successfully implemented pedestrian-only zones that have significantly improved the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. For instance, Burlington's Church Street Marketplace in Vermont is an excellent example of how pedestrianization can revitalize an area (source: Project for Public Spaces). Moreover, studies show that such transformations can boost local businesses by increasing foot traffic (source: National Association of City Transportation Officials). By making this change, we can make Montclair more attractive and safer for everyone who lives here or comes to visit. We are not blind in making this petition and are well aware that compromises are necessary if you want to make an actual change. We would be open to Church Street becoming a pedestrian-only zone for weekends only or at specialized times.
