The Issue

Car Accident Police Calls on Chesapeake Ave/Park Ave in the Past 6 Months

Chesapeake Avenue is a residential road with a speed limit of 25 mph. It is notorious for problems with speeding, and accidents frequently occur on the intersection of Park Ave and Chesapeake Ave because there is no traffic light nor anti-speeding tools. According to local residents, vehicles pass down Chesapeake Ave at rates of up to 50 mph on a two-lane residential road where many children and families live. In fact, there have been 9 police calls on this single roadway in the past 6 months alone, according to the Chesapeake PD. Many of these occurred in broad daylight, and a third included fire department involvement for treatment of injuries. These accidents are happening on what should be a safe and low-speed neighborhood avenue. This road also leads to 2 nearby middle schools and elementary schools, and is a core artery for the vibrant South Norfolk neighborhood.

Due to the lack of protective infrastructure, I suffered from a 3-car accident at this residential intersection. When my accident occurred, there were multiple families and children playing outside nearby who could have easily witnessed this or other traumatic motor events. Harmful events like this can be prevented with traffic lights and traffic calming equipment, a worthy investment in the time of police officers and safety of residents and visitors. Traffic calming on the affected portion of Chesapeake Avenue will increase the quality of life for drivers and residents. It will also save the CPD's resources of time and personnel with a cost effective and highly necessary development.
