Make Canadian news local and impartial

The Issue

Canadian local news outlets should only be owned and operated by Canadians or Canadian-owned and operated entities. Also, no one company or individual should be allowed to own more than three local news outlets across Canada. Local news is unique to its locale and reflects that community, as well as the values and beliefs of all the people in those communities. No national or foreign entity or corporation (foreign or domestic) should have the power to influence the way news is reported on a local level. News should be impartial.

Therefore, this petition requests that the Federal Government make it one of their mandates within this current election cycle to break up the foreign and domestically owned monopolies of Canadian news outlets and agencies, such as the one operated by the American-owned Postmedia, which is owned by the American Hedge funds, BlackRock and Vanguard. This includes, but is not limited to, all broadsheet, digital, and televised news outlets.

This petition also requests that the Federal Government enact a law stating that no Canadian news outlet, including but not limited to broadsheet, digital, and televised, may be owned, influenced, or operated by a foreign entity, company, or government. Nor may domestic entities, companies, or corporations that take possession of domestic news outlets be financially beholden to a foreign entity, company, or government.

Further, this petition also requests that no domestically owned, operated, and financed Canadian entity, company, or corporation be allowed to own or operate more than three private news outlets.

As an example, the PostMedia Canadian network of news outlets is vast, and encompasses all formats, including broadsheet and tabloid daily newspapers, community newspapers, and numerous digital platforms. Attached is as comprehensive list of their holdings, categorized by province, as I could find. Make sure to check your news sources against the list below.
No one entity should own or have influence over this many Canadian news outlets. News can only be impartial, when it's independent.
