Make Cames Road Safer for Residents and Visitors!

The issue

Residents of Cames Road and locals from surrounding areas are calling for urgent action following the latest car accident on this perilous stretch of unsealed road in Mangawhai.

Numerous people have had frightening experiences on Cames Road—incidents that resulted in vehicle damage, hospital visits, and lasting anxiety. Some residents are hesitant to spend time in their own yards, deterred by the constant dust and the danger of speeding cars - others have experienced social isolation as friends and family will not drive the road due to frequent punctures and other car damage.

Beyond the risks of accidents, the dust caused by an increasing number of vehicles using the road is a serious concern. Airborne dust is causing respiratory problems, worsening allergies, and other health issues for the 200+ residents, especially the children, the elderly, and those with existing conditions.

Cames Road has become unsafe and unhealthy for those who live along it and those who travel through it. This is a problem that needs urgent attention.

Cyclone Gabrielle caused extensive damage along Cames Road thanks to the high volume of rainfall runoff, which has caused large ditches and part of the road to be badly eroded.  Measures, such as re-gravelling and grading, have only caused further hazards in the form of loose gravel.  Trucks and other traffic using Cames Road as a through-road contribute to severe corrugations. There have been numerous vehicle accidents on Cames Road over the past year - at least 11 according to emergency services. We ask for action before someone is killed!

Even without official statistics, the experiences of residents paint a clear picture of the difficulties this road is causing.

We respectfully urge the relevant authorities, Kaipara District Council and Auckland Transport, to seal Cames Road and enforce proper safety measures as a matter of great urgency.

Please sign this petition to help make Cames Road SAFE.
