The Issue

Having a child on the autism spectrum is a journey filled with joys and challenges. One constant concern many parents share is ensuring the safety and well-being of our children when we are not with them. Recently, I came across a powerful movement started by two women who successfully launched a petition for installing cameras in special education classrooms in their state. Their initiative has gained immense support, and it inspired me to take action in North Carolina.

In special education settings, where our children are uniquely vulnerable, it's essential to ensure transparency and accountability. Cameras can offer peace of mind to parents like myself, allowing us to feel confident about our children's safety when they're at school. They serve as an unbiased observer, protecting both students and educators by providing an accurate record of daily interactions in these specialized environments.

Evidence from existing studies and school districts with camera programs demonstrates that the presence of cameras can significantly reduce incidents of bullying and inappropriate behavior. Cameras not only deter harmful conduct but also corroborate the professionalism and dedication of teachers who work tirelessly to support our children.

Furthermore, these recordings can be invaluable for training and development, helping educators refine their teaching methods with the insights gained from viewing classroom interactions. Importantly, camera systems can be installed with strict privacy protocols to ensure recordings are only accessed in appropriate circumstances, protecting the privacy of students and teachers alike.

In North Carolina, we must prioritize the safety of our most vulnerable students by implementing this practical and effective measure. This is not just about prevention, but also about fostering an environment of trust and collaboration between parents and educators.

I urge you to join me in calling upon the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as well as local school boards to mandate the installation of cameras in all special education classrooms statewide. Together, we can create a safer, more transparent educational environment for our children.

Please sign this petition to make our voices heard and help ensure our children's safety.
