Breed specific legislation unfairly targets dogs of specific breeds as aggressive or dangerous, regardless of their actual temperament. These laws are discriminatory and ineffective in preventing dog bites or attacks. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) conducted a study that yielded no evidence that BSL made communities safer or reduced dog bites.
Furthermore, banning or regulating dogs of certain breeds has negative effects on both the animals and their owners. Dogs that are subject to breed specific legislation often miss out on socialization opportunities, exercise, and proper vet care as a result of their owner's efforts to keep them from being taken away. Responsible owners with dogs of these breeds are frequently subject to housing restrictions that make finding affordable places to stay difficult, and may even be forced to give up their beloved family pet.
