Bernard Goetz is known for the NY Chamber Street subway station shooting in 1984. He had a failed New York mayoral campaign attempt in 2001. This is after he declared bankruptcy. Better known as the Subway Vigilante, Goetz shot four Black teenagers in a subway car in 1984 after claiming they were going to mug him.
On the night of Dec. 22, 1984, Goetz was on the number 2 subway train in lower Manhattan when four teenagers boarded his train: Barry Allen, Troy Canty, Darrell Cabey, and James Ramseur. Goetz, who had been mugged a few years earlier and carried a gun because of it, claimed they asked him for $5, but he thought he may get mugged. He pulled out a gun and shot them all before escaping. The National Rifle Association seized on the case as an opportunity to promote gun ownership and expand their market beyond rural areas to cities. As for Goetz, he is still living, devoted to squirrels and vegetarianism and entirely unrepentant. Read more here:
Darrell Cabey's family sued Goetz and won. Goetz was supposed to pay 43 million to Darrell Cabey. Cabey was shot twice and left permanently disabled from the altercation. However, Cabey's family never received the full amount.
Goetz still lives in New York City. This petition recommends that the state of New York investigate why Goetz was never held financially accountable and to see if something could be done legally. If he can run for mayor and afford to live in NYC, he can repay Darrell Cabey's family. We need to help rewrite this history, and the time to act is now! FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY FOR GUN VIOLENCE CRIMES COULD BE AN IMPORTANT STEP IN GUN VIOLENCE SAFETY.
