In September 2026, I went to my doctor for what I thought was a routine check-up. Little did I know, that visit would change my life. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a diagnosis I might never have received if not for that proactive health check. This experience opened my eyes to a crucial issue: the lack of automatic prostate cancer screening for men in the UK.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with more than 52,000 men diagnosed each year and it is expected to rise. Tragically, more than 11,000 die from it annually because they are not diagnosed early enough. Early detection is vital and drastically increases the chances of successful treatment and survival.
Despite this, there is currently no national programme offering routine prostate cancer screening, like there is for breast or cervical cancer. This leaves many men unaware of their risk until it is too late. Screening can help detect cancer at an early stage, often before symptoms develop, allowing for more effective and less invasive treatment options.
Implementing automatic prostate cancer screening for men over the age of 50—or younger if they have risk factors such as family history or certain ethnic backgrounds—could save thousands of lives. Such a program could involve a streamlined process for PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing, which is a simple blood test that helps detect early signs of prostate problems.
Financially, the long-term healthcare costs of treating advanced prostate cancer are considerably higher than those of early intervention. Automatic screenings can reduce the burden on our healthcare system by catching the disease earlier, resulting in reduced treatment costs and fewer hospital admissions.
Let’s advocate for a change that will give every man in the UK a fighting chance against prostate cancer.
