Make Australian Housing Affordable (MAHA)

The issue

We propose these steps for the Government, regardless of parties.

  1. Introduce yearly land holding tax/levy on Investment properties (both in major and regional Australia).
    •  1 PPOR+1 Investment property - No tax
    • 2-3 = AUD 12,000 per year (no tax deductible)
    • Above 3 = AUD 15,000 per property.  (no tax deductible)
    • All the taxes paid this way are used for new housing and infrastructure projects. Build high speed rails, good schools, hospitals, economy zones. We call this a real growth.
  2. Reduce migration for the next 5 years, no more than 75000 per year.
  3. Scrap off CGT discounts now.
  4. These rules should be entwined into tax structure regardless of who is in power. These rules should be supported by both ruling and opposition party, so that there is no fear of Governments being toppled down. Let the parties battle on other meritocracies to form a Govt, but retain these policies so that  the housing crisis is fixed and we can all call it again a 'Lucky Country'.
  5. Buying and repaying mortgages shouldn't be the only thing we give for future generations. Let some freedom prevail and have a worry free life.

Australian housing prices have skyrocketed to heights that are unsustainable and unattainable for the average citizen. This has been exacerbated by governmental policies that, rather than alleviating the crisis, perpetuate it by inflating the market further. Many young Australians work tirelessly, only to funnel their entire income into servicing mortgages, never truly experiencing the financial freedom or stability that home ownership should provide.

Successive governments, irrespective of party affiliation, have played a part in this by favoring vote bank policies over the genuine need to make housing affordable. With interest rates rising and housing supply failing to meet demand, it is clear that immediate intervention is required at the highest levels of government to ensure that housing is accessible.

We implore the Prime Minister of Australia, the Leader of the Opposition, the Housing Minister, the Shadow Housing Minister, and the Treasury Minister to acknowledge the severity of this issue. We demand a set of measures to curb housing inflation — including policy reforms aimed at increasing the supply of affordable homes, regulating market prices, and offering greater support for first-time homebuyers through subsidies or incentives

By signing this petition, you help highlight the urgency of this situation and push for actionable change that benefits all Australians. Let's put an end to the housing crisis and secure a future where home ownership is a viable goal for everyone.
