The Issue

During my time in the educational system of Athens, AL, I've experienced considerable stress due to the requirement of completing I-ready lessons in order to qualify for exam exemptions. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way, as many of my peers express similar sentiments. This requirement has a profound impact on our ability to focus on other academic and extracurricular activities, resulting in an overwhelming burden that does not contribute to our educational growth.

I-ready is designed as a supplemental educational tool aimed at improving students' learning outcomes. However, when it takes on the form of a barrier to exam exemption, its purpose is skewed. Research indicates that stress and anxiety are detrimental to learning, impacting memory retention and problem-solving abilities (American Psychological Association). Students in Athens, like myself, are facing undue stress, which contradicts the primary goal of education: fostering a healthy learning environment.

Moreover, I-ready lessons often do not align with the curriculum taught in our classes. This misalignment forces students to split their focus, juggling between classroom instruction and I-ready tasks that may not enhance their understanding of core subjects. According to a study by the American Journal of Education, classroom-based learning tailored to a teacher's unique lesson plan is far more effective than generic, one-size-fits-all online modules.

Rather than mandating I-ready lessons for exemptions, Athens schools should consider alternative means of assessing student readiness and comprehension, such as project-based assessments or teacher evaluations. Such methods not only align more closely with classroom instruction but also reduce unnecessary stress caused by external, unrelated tasks.

By signing this petition, we can bring attention to the issue and request the Athens school board to review and amend their exemption policy. Together, we can advocate for a system that truly supports the educational journey and well-being of students. Let's make a change for a more supportive and effective educational environment!
