Make Annual Heart Health Checks Mandatory for UK Officers
The Issue
My name is Janice, and on 14 June 2025, my ex-husband Michael Bruce a dedicated Metropolitan Police officer suddenly passed away from a heart attack.
Policing is an incredibly high-stress, physically demanding profession. Officers put themselves in the line of duty every single day, facing challenging situations that take a toll on their physical and mental health. Unfortunately, Michael’s story is not unique; heart-related issues are a significant risk for those in such a strenuous job. According to the British Heart Foundation, heart disease is the UK's biggest killer, claiming the lives of more than 160,000 people each year.
A mandatory annual heart health check for all British police officers would provide a much-needed safety net, allowing potential issues to be caught early, before they become life-threatening. Early detection saves lives. Such a policy would demonstrate the value of our officers’ well-being and create a culture of health awareness within the force, leading to increased morale and a stronger, safer police department.
Implementing mandatory heart health checks will require adjustments in current occupational health procedures, but it is a practical and necessary step. Similar initiatives have been successfully adopted in other high-risk professions. For instance, commercial pilots and some active-duty military personnel undergo regular comprehensive health screenings as a condition of their continued employment.
Our police officers dedicate their lives to protecting our communities; it is only right that we protect them in return by ensuring their health and safety. Let's standardize annual, mandatory heart health checks for all UK police officers without exception. This policy would honor the memory of those we've lost and protect those who still serve. Please sign this petition to urge the Home Office and relevant authorities to make this a priority. Your support can make the difference in safeguarding lives, just as officers safeguard ours every day. Sign now to push for change.
