I am a proud caretaker of 16 animals, living on benefits. The cost of veterinary care to ensure the safety and well-being of these animals is exorbitantly high, making it difficult for me to afford their proper care. This struggle is not unique to me but shared by many pet owners across the country who are also grappling with the financial burden of animal healthcare.

Our National Health Service (NHS) provides free healthcare for all UK residents. However, this does not extend to our beloved pets who are often considered part of our families. In 2019, UK pet owners spent an average of £822 on veterinary bills per pet (PDSA PAW Report), a figure that is unaffordable for many households.

We propose that animal care should be made free alongside NHS treatment. Not only would this alleviate financial stress from pet owners like myself but also ensure that all pets receive necessary medical attention without delay or compromise due to costs.

We urge policy makers and relevant authorities to consider this proposal seriously and take steps towards its implementation. It's time we recognize and address the need for affordable animal healthcare in our society.
