Countless families across Thurrock are currently struggling with the financial burdens associated with getting their children to and from school. This not only puts undue pressure on the parents or caregivers but also impedes the learning progress of these children, as inconsistent attendance can be detrimental to their education.

According to the National Centre for Social Research, about 14% of children in the UK have missed school because their parents couldn't afford the travel costs. This is a significant proportion of our future generation whose educational needs are being compromised due to this issue. The vulnerable and low-income families are the hardest hit which is leading to an increase in the education gap between various socio-economic classes.

Therefore, it is crucial to make all school-related travel free for those under 16. This simple but impactful solution would alleviate parental stress, ensure consistent school attendance for children, and help us move towards an equitable system where quality education and access are not dependent upon one's financial status.
