Hi super supporters!

In March I asked you to join me in taking action on Morrisons, calling on them to remove plastic from their own-brand period products and to make plastic-free and reusable options available in their stores, because they don’t currently stock them.

We did this in our thousands over the course of a week by tweeting and sending them emails, but we never received any response. I have sent them countless emails, before and after the action took place, every time receiving their automated response of ‘we will reply in 5-7 days’, but nothing ever came, so last week I decided to give them a call to find out what was happening.

When I got through to one of their representatives and told them about the situation, they said it was very ‘weird’ that I hadn’t received a reply. I told them that it wasn’t just me that hadn’t received a response, many others hadn’t either. They said that they had received thousands of emails about this issue in March, which is when the action on them occurred. They continued to say that because thousands of individuals (you!) had sent in the same email template, they decided to close all cases (emails) and not reply to any of them.

I was surprised about what they had done. It is wrong that they have closed thousands of cases and not replied to them because most ‘were a template email’. Thousands of you, customers and individuals got in touch with them to voice your concerns and suggestions, you didn’t email them to have your emails ignored and closed. So, what does this say about Morrison’s? It suggests that they do not care about what their customers think or about the environment.

I then requested a meeting with their feminine hygiene or relevant team to discuss this issue, they said they would email me, but there would be no guarantee. Shortly, I received an email which told a ‘Miss Danish’ to write to the food waste team to request a meeting. I had spent 15 minutes discussing period products and then received an email from them to contact food waste department.

The excuse that their representative made as to why thousands of you didn’t receive a reply, doesn’t sit well with me and doesn’t make sense as to why I haven’t received any correspondence either, as all the emails I’ve sent them over the last 18 months have been completely different. This appears to be a deliberate attempt to avoid and side-line this important issue.. in the hope that it will just go away.

So, today I have sent three letters to different teams and departments within Morrisons, to complain that they haven’t responded to our emails, to request a reason in writing as to why they closed the cases and to request again a meeting with the relevant department to discuss the issue of plastic in their period products, the impacts its having and the campaign.

Let’s wait and see what they say, I will keep you updated as soon as I receive any news. In the meantime, it would be great if you could tell Morrisons how you feel about them closing and ignoring your emails and to request that they meet me to discuss this issue. You can do this by:

  • By emailing their CEO David Potts (david.potts-ceo@morrisonsplc.co.uk) and customer service department (customerservice@morrisonsplc.co.uk).
  • Raising your views on social media by tagging @morrisons, if you do this remember to use the hashtag #EndPeriodPlastic.
  • By sending them a letter at their FREEPOST address: WM MORRISON SUPERMARKETS PLC, FREEPOST RTGY-SZRS-YKES, Hilmore House, Gain Lane, Bradford, BD3 7DL
  • Or calling their headquarters: 0345 611 6111

Thank you for all your continued support and comments!

Ella :)
