Real estate is one of the basic necessities of people and it is becoming unaffordable for most of the new generation. You either get that through inheritance or spend all your life paying for your home cutting down on every other expense. In a democracy where the government is supposed to be for the people, the government cannot let one of the basic necessities become unaffordable for most people.

I believe real estate is getting unaffordable because it is seen as a safe investment asset and is getting hoarded by few people and they have no consequence of hoarding.

Let us ask the government to link all real estate ownership to Aadhar, or forget about it. Just like we demonetized all currency holding. When people can stand in line to save their meager savings, I'm sure people with honest real estate holdings will not lose out on their ownership.

When we can tax income progressively, why not real estate?

Let us ask the government to tax hoarders of real estate pay more through property taxes than those who hold real estate for living in them.

Developers who build houses and sell only a small fraction of them to recover investment and then hoard remaining for appreciation should pay heavy property taxes so that it makes sense for them to sell them to people who can actually use them.
