Make all forms of abuse mandatory to report in WA

The issue

In Western Australia (WA), we find ourselves in a unique and alarming situation where only sexual abuse is legally required to be reported. This exclusionary approach leaves victims of other forms of abuse—whether it's physical, emotional, or neglect—vulnerable and at risk. Despite being just as damaging, these other forms of abuse aren't held to the same legal and societal priority. When abuse isn't treated with the urgency it deserves, we send a message that it's acceptable, or even unimportant, compared to other concerns.

This issue hits close to home for many, as it fosters an environment where abusers can continue their harmful behaviours unchecked, and victims do not receive the support and justice they deserve. I strongly believe that turning a blind eye to any form of abuse is unacceptable, and it's time for WA to catch up with the rest of Australia, where all forms of abuse are legally mandated to be reported.

The lack of comprehensive abuse reporting laws in WA not only harms victims but also disrupts the community at large. Studies have repeatedly shown that consistent and comprehensive reporting laws help decrease overall abuse rates. For instance, in states where all abuses are mandated to be reported, communities have seen a decline in repeat offences and a rise in community awareness and prevention efforts.

Ignoring certain types of abuse makes it easier for them to continue. We must demand legal changes that protect all individuals, regardless of the type of abuse they suffer. By ensuring that all forms of abuse are noted and reported, we enhance community protection, increase accountability among potential abusers, and foster a safer environment for everyone.

We urge the Western Australian government to introduce legislation making all forms of abuse mandatory to report, thereby aligning with national standards across the country. Stand with us in advocating for equal protection for every WA resident. Sign the petition to make all forms of abuse reportable and give all victims the justice and support they deserve.
