The Issue

Imagine boarding a flight, ready for a safe journey, only to experience a nightmare because others don't heed health warnings. This is precisely what happened when my son, who suffers from a severe nut allergy, was on an airplane where the crew had announced three times that no nuts should be consumed on board due to an allergy alert. Despite warnings, the passenger in front of him opened a packet of peanut M&Ms.

The flight attendant initially dismissed our alert, believing they were simply eating Pringles. It wasn't until my husband directly intervened and confirmed the presence of peanuts that the attendant apologized and had the nuts put away. Unfortunately, by then, it was too late—my son was already reacting. His eyes swelled, and he began sneezing uncontrollably, requiring antihistamines to manage his symptoms.

Every flight should be a safe space for passengers, just as schools have become nut-free zones to protect children with allergies. With the rising prevalence of nut allergies—impacting over 3 million Americans, including children and adults, and causing around 150 deaths annually, according to a study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology—it's increasingly crucial that airlines adopt strict measures to protect passengers with life-threatening allergies.

We are calling on all airlines to implement a strict nut-free policy. Announcements are simply not enough. Proper enforcement needs to be in place, along with regular training for flight staff to effectively identify and act upon potential allergen threats. Airlines can offer nut-free snack alternatives, work with passengers at risk before the flight, and create clearly communicated guidelines that make air travel accessible for those with severe allergies.

Join us in urging airline companies to create nut-free policies and enforce them vigorously. Protecting passengers with allergies should be a universal standard in today's world. Please sign this petition to ensure safety for all passengers aboard flights.
