Make all city areas accessible with bus stops
The Issue
Today, I found myself in a frustrating situation that many of us in Greeley/Evans, Colorado, have faced: having to walk from 35th Avenue all the way to the Greeley Mall because there were no bus stops in between. This inconvenience not only disrupts daily routines but also highlights a significant gap in our public transportation system.
Public transportation is a cornerstone of urban living, providing access to employment, education, healthcare, and recreation. Yet, when entire neighborhoods lack accessible bus stops, it leaves many residents stranded and unable to take part in the opportunities our city offers. This gap in infrastructure particularly affects the elderly, people with disabilities, and those in low-income brackets who rely on public transportation as their primary means of mobility.
According to the American Public Transportation Association, public transit use reduces the nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually and saves the U.S. the equivalent of 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline each year. When cities like ours neglect their public transportation networks, we not only deny our residents essential services but also miss out on environmental benefits.
Other cities have successfully enhanced their transit systems by strategically adding bus stops every few blocks in densely populated or underserved areas, thus significantly improving accessibility for residents. We believe that Greeley/Evans can join these forward-thinking communities by reviewing the public transportation layout and placing additional bus stops where they are most needed.
We propose a detailed assessment of Greeley’s/Evans current bus stop distribution to identify critical gaps and subsequently, the introduction of new bus stops, particularly in underserved areas. This initiative will require collaboration between the local government, transportation authorities, and community members to ensure that the new stops serve the highest number of residents possible.
By signing this petition, you are helping advocate for a more inclusive and accessible transportation system in Greeley/Evans. Let’s work together to ensure that everyone in our community has the mobility they need to live, work, and thrive.
