Make alcohol less accessible to save lives
The Issue
Growing up, my siblings and I have watched our mum struggle with alcohol dependency, a battle that has cast a long shadow over our lives. Our mum has been an alcoholic for nearly as long as I can remember, despite the deep love and support my siblings and I offer her. She has come close to losing her life twice due to alcohol, an ordeal that has filled our hearts with fear and despair. Even after years of begging her to seek help, and after achieving nearly two years of sobriety, she relapsed this year. This heartbreaking cycle seems endless, and we are exhausted from watching her slip away.
Alcohol is alarmingly easy to access. It’s in every pub, every shop, and on every corner, making it difficult for those battling addiction to avoid its destructive allure. Our story isn’t unique—millions of families are affected by alcohol abuse, a leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, alcohol contributes to more than 3 million deaths each year globally, representing 5.3% of all deaths. This statistic highlights an urgent need for change.
We propose stricter regulations on the sale and distribution of alcohol. By implementing measures such as reducing the number of outlets where alcohol can be purchased, increasing taxes to discourage excessive consumption, and enforcing stricter age verification processes, we can significantly reduce the availability of alcohol. Additionally, these measures should be coupled with increased funding for addiction support programs to help those like my mum receive the assistance they need.
Joining this cause means advocating for the health and safety of countless individuals and families impacted by alcohol dependency. It’s about giving them a fighting chance and preventing tragedies before they can occur. The government must take proactive steps to address the public health crisis posed by alcohol abuse, recognizing it for the scourge it truly is.
