The Issue

As a student attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Alabama, I witness firsthand the struggles of balancing education alongside financial constraints. Alabama State University, an institution dedicated to the education and empowerment of African-American students, is unfortunately becoming less affordable for many of its students. This is primarily due to inadequate educational funding and poor administrative practices that fail to address the escalating costs of housing and tuition.

The situation is exacerbated by the looming threat of cuts to federal financial aid under the current political climate. As an attendee of this institution, I am deeply concerned about the impact these financial challenges have on my future and that of my peers. Many students here at Alabama State University rely heavily on financial aid to make ends meet. Without it, they might be forced to abandon their education, dreams, and the promise of a brighter future.

Numerous studies indicate that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, especially in low-income states like Alabama. Unfortunately, the increasing cost of education is putting this essential key out of reach for many deserving students. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the cost of tuition has risen sharply over the past decade, with Alabama ranking poorly in terms of affordability.

Moreover, administrative inefficiencies at Alabama State University are only adding to the problem. Reports from current students highlight issues of mismanagement and lack of transparency, which contribute to unnecessary financial burdens.

We can change this. We demand that Alabama State University take actionable steps to reduce costs associated with tuition and housing. This can be achieved through reallocating current funds more efficiently, increasing transparency in financial management, and advocating for more educational funding from the state. Furthermore, the administration should actively seek partnerships and sponsorships that could alleviate costs for students.

This is more than just a plea for help; it is a call for justice and equality in education. Ensuring affordable education is not just beneficial—it's essential for nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. We urge the university and state officials to take immediate action to address this pressing issue and help our community thrive.

Please sign this petition to make Alabama State University more affordable, and support the future of countless students who are aspiring to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
