Hello everyone!

Remember me? That pesky Australian woman who’s decided to stick her nose into the issue of US gun violence? 

Well! I’m delighted to advise that finally our petition has passed the 2500 signature stage, and now sits within the credible shelf of petitions that aren’t going to go away. 

I’ve seen a lot of excuses from the 100K+ people who viewed but did not sign the petition. Things like, “great idea but too ambitious”, or “petitions achieve nothing”, or “the gun laws are set up to prevent NRA or lawmaker accountability”. 

My response is YES, the laws are stacked to protect the overly-protected, un-accountable few. And that’s the point of the petition. My goal is ambitious indeed. My goal is to keep this petition open until it grows to such an embarrassingly huge size that one day a gun-reform advocate in Congress, or perhaps even at the Whitehouse, finally holds it up and asks….. “why is some woman in Australia more concerned about the safety of our children than most of the American parents and grandparents who preside at Capitol Hill?”.

For the uninspired who claim that meaningful gun reform isn’t possible, because of how State and the US Constitutions create a circular loop of avoid-ability, I say the following:

If a 50 year old established Supreme Court ruling like Roe-v-Wade can be undone, then so can anything else that’s presently assumed to be cast in stone. 

There is NO explicitly stated constitutional protection for the NRA or public officials who take money from gun lobby groups. Just like there was no explicitly stated constitutional protection for abortion. And that’s why it was possible to overturn Roe, just like it’s possible to overturn the decision that organisations (like NRA) have the same rights as individuals. The US Constitution does not say so, and so the claim that it’s established is nonsense!

It just takes a moment in time where we have the right lawmaker on our side, the right lawyer, and the right publicity at the right time. I’m here and I’m willing to wait for that moment. Innocent lives are at stake and that is worth waiting as long as it takes.

Before I go, let me just update you on a fact that I know is PROOF of how my goal is possible. Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, is already working on a state bill that uses the Texas bounty law re women seeking abortion, against itself. Gov Newsom’s proposal makes it possible for anyone in the state of CA to sue the gun folks for perceived damages caused by the sale of guns. It is possible to change the “unchangeable”. Anything is possible when people want it enough. I am conscious every day that I can go to the supermarket, a party, a concert, to church or to a game, without having to worry about getting shot dead. Everyone should feel as secure as I do. Even if they live in America. Enough.
