The Issue

FACTS

• 25% of children on the spectrum have PROFOUND AUTISM. Profound autism is a designation given to those who require around-the-clock care, and who are largely non-verbal.

• There are several medical conditions which are OVER-REPRESENTED in profound autism. These include seizure disorders, metabolic disturbances, immune system abnormalities and gastrointestinal dysfunction.

• Many of these conditions appear when a child suffers a regression. A regression is when a typically developing, healthy child suddenly loses previously acquired skills (such as talking) and disconnects from the world around them.

Please sign this petition in support of Secretary Kennedy’s effort to give a voice to this marginalized group of children and fund research to determine the relationship between these acquired medical abnormalities and the resulting behaviors we call autism.

The quality of life for children with profound autism and their families is hinging on the advancement of this research.
