Make 4th and Grant Safer for Hinsdale Families - Support a Four-Way Stop Sign

The Issue

Our community in Hinsdale, IL is facing a growing safety crisis at the intersection of 4th Street and Grant Street. The sharp increase in accidents since 2022 compared to previous years is deeply alarming. Every day, countless drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists navigate this intersection with increasing unease. However, the impact is felt most acutely by our children. With four schools less than a mile away – Hinsdale Middle School, St. Isaac Jogues School, Madison Elementary, and Hinsdale Central High School – throngs of students and train commuters traverse this dangerous intersection daily. Their safety, and the peace of mind of their parents, is jeopardized with each crossing.

The current situation is simply unsustainable. Despite efforts to improve traffic signage, documented video evidence shows continued driver confusion and accidents. If we remain passive, we are implicitly accepting the inevitability of further accidents, injuries, and potentially even fatalities. Our children deserve a safe route to school, and everyone in our community deserves safe intersections. The cost of inaction is far too high. Upgrading to a four-way stop will demonstrably reduce the risk of accidents, creating a safer environment for all.

The alarming rise in accidents compared to previous years, coupled with the proximity to four schools, makes this a critical safety issue demanding immediate action. While we understand and appreciate the existing guidelines from 'The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices,' the unique circumstances of this intersection necessitate prioritizing safety. Every day we delay, we put our community's most vulnerable at risk. We cannot wait for another accident or a tragedy to occur before addressing this urgent concern. The safety of our community, particularly our children, is non-negotiable. By signing this petition, you urge the Village of Hinsdale and the Police Department's Traffic Information Officer to prioritize safety and implement a four-way stop at 4th and Grant. Together, we can make a tangible difference and create a safer Hinsdale for everyone.
