The Issue

I’ve worked at Nelha for over 20 years and each year, the Ironman event brings more disruption than benefit to our community. Unlike what some might believe, this event does not infuse our local economy with significant gains; rather, it puts excessive strain on our already limited resources. For years, I have not encountered anyone in my community who feels that they profit from this event. Instead, we face the frustrating realities of increased traffic congestion, noise, and environmental degradation.

One week before this year's race, I have already seen more trash appearing on the roadsides, and competitors are starting to litter Wawaloli Beach Park, ignoring the provided trash cans. This troubling sight arrives even before the main influx of athletes and spectators. What kind of example are we setting for our keiki, the future stewards of this land, when they see our parks and beaches treated with such disregard?

Moreover, the Ironman event monopolizes public spaces, making them inaccessible to locals—our beaches, roads, and even local businesses are overrun. This compromises the quality of life for residents who have made Kona their home, not to mention the strain it places on our emergency services already stretched thin.

The environmental impact cannot be ignored. The constant presence of thousands of participants and spectators risks damaging our delicate ecosystems, particularly in coastal areas like ours, where preservation is crucial.

While we appreciate the athletic spirit of the Ironman competition, it is time to reconsider its place in our community. We urge the organizers to explore alternative, more sustainable options for holding this event elsewhere. We call upon community leaders, local businesses, and environmental advocates to join us in ending the Kona Ironman event after 2026, creating space for new events that responsibly celebrate our natural beauty and support our local community.

Sign this petition to ensure the 2026 Kona Ironman is the last, and together, let’s move forward with innovative solutions that support both our environment and our community.
