Maintain the Venue of Jones High School Class of 2025 Graduation at the Kia Center

The Issue

As a proud Jones High School Class of 2003 Alumni, and a parent to a Class of 2024 Alumni, I firmly believe in the strong sense of pride, tradition, and community that resonates within our school. The location of our graduation ceremonies is deeply significant for us, the Jones High community. For the Class of 2025 graduation ceremony, any move from the Kia Center could potentially disrupt a cherished tradition and milestone for our students.

Jones High School has been historically successful in fostering unity within the community. The graduation ceremony at the Kia Center has seen numerous community partners offer their support to graduates who might lack a network of support at home, furthering the unity among us. Such invaluable traditions and partnerships risk being minimized if the ceremony is moved to the Additions Arena due to it's distance and ticket restrictions.

Moreover, we must consider the financial implications such a move could impose on the families of our students. The geographic shift to the Additions Arena could present financial challenges for families struggling to navigate economic difficulties. This could potentially deter some family members from attending this momentous event in their student's life. Per the Florida Department of Education, Jones High student population is the only high school student population in OCPS that is considered 100% economically disadvantaged. Many students and families either rely on public transportation, walking, or ridesharing to attend school. This is also true in regard to graduation as the location makes it economically feasible for families to get there when held at the Kia Center. However, moving the location to Additions Arena could present significant challenges for the families as public transportation to the Additions can take over an hour, ridesharing is an estimated $50, and walking is not feasible.

Therefore, I urge everyone, every alumnus, parent, student, teacher, community partner, and supporter of Jones High School, to sign this petition. Let's stand together to ensure the Class of 2025 graduation ceremony stays at the Kia Center, preserving our traditions and allowing every student to celebrate their hard work without financial obstacles. Your signature matters. Preserving our tradition, our unity, and our pride, starts with you.
