Maintain the Presence of the Community Fridge in St. Clement

The Issue

I am a parishioner of St. Clement Parish and I have personally witnessed the significant role our community fridge plays in addressing food insecurity within our area. This fridge is not just an appliance; it is a lifeline for many families and individuals who rely on it to supplement their meals.

In America, approximately 12.8% of U.S households people faced food insecurity in 2022 (source: USDA). In Massachusetts alone, about 19.5% of households reported food insecurity in October 2023 (source: Project Bread). The community fridge has been instrumental in reducing these numbers locally.

Our goals for the fridge have not changed:

  1. A community fridge is a free, 24/7 resource for those in need of food
  2. It is run on donations by the community and maintained with the help of volunteers
  3. Mutual aid relies on solidarity and local give-and-take, not charity

The removal or relocation of this community fridge further away from the church would be detrimental to those who depend on it daily. It would also undermine our collective efforts to combat hunger and promote mutual aid within our neighborhood.

We urge local representatives and the greater community to recognize the importance of this resource and ensure its continued operation at its current location. By signing this petition, you are standing with us in solidarity for a more compassionate and inclusive Somerville/Medford where no one goes hungry. We want the fridge to to STAY at St. Clements!
