Presently, many single occupiers across the country receive a 25% discount on their Council Tax, but this hard-earned discount is under threat. Council Tax provides critical funding for local services and individuals living alone should not be penalised. 

This action would be in direct conflict with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayners, commenting on 3rd September in Parliament, that Labour “is about making sure that working people are better off and we’ll intend to do that.”

Actions speak louder than words, Ms Rayner.

The removal of this reduction would be a double blow for pensioners who are also facing the prospect of no winter fuel allowance and energy prices once again increasing by up to 10%.

Around 2.45 million one-person households in England would be affected if this discount is amended or removed (according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics). As such, we call on our local Council and national policy makers to pledge their continued support for single occupiers and ensure the continuation of the Council Tax discount for single person’s households.
