Maintain the 15-Minute Frequency of the UP Express Train Service

The Issue

As a daily commuter, I rely on the UP Express to get me downtown for work. It's not just me; many in our community depend on this service for its reliability and speed. The current frequency of every 15 minutes is crucial for us because it provides flexibility with when we can catch the train.

There are concerns about reducing frequency. This would significantly impact our daily routines and could potentially lead to overcrowded trains during peak hours. According to Transport Canada data (2019), public transit users in Toronto make up about 24% of all commuters - a significant portion who would be affected by any changes to service frequency. Also, this train is usually only 2-3 carts and overcrowding is guaranteed to happen.

We understand that decisions about public transit must take into account various factors such as cost and ridership numbers. However, we urge decision-makers to consider how integral the UP Express is to our community's mobility and livelihoods. If ridership is the main concern, checking and enforcing payment may address that issue as the train is often at capacity during rush hour.

We call upon Metrolinx and relevant authorities to maintain the 15-minute frequency of the UP Express train service. We believe that preserving this level of service will ensure efficient commuting times for residents while also supporting sustainable urban transportation practices.
