The Issue

The former West Jordan Elementary School site, located in our cherished and growing West Jordan community, holds the potential to transform into a space that truly serves its residents. However, recent proposals to alter the zoning of this site pose a significant threat to our neighborhood's character and quality of life. The current zoning designation—R 1 10 requires that each lot be a minimum of 10,000 square feet. This standard is crucial for maintaining the spacious, suburban feel of our community, ensuring adequate land for families, gardens, and green spaces.

Changing the lot size regulations threatens to increase density and lead to overcrowding, strain on public services, and a decrease in local property values. It would fundamentally alter the suburban landscape we have worked hard to cultivate and enjoy. West Jordan's charm is intrinsically linked to its wide-open spaces and close-knit community feel—elements that would be compromised by reducing lot sizes.

Keeping the R-1-10 classification not only preserves these essential characteristics but also aligns with the city's long-term plans for balanced growth and community sustainability. Smaller lots could lead to increased traffic, higher demands on schools, and more pressure on our infrastructure, which are concerns for safety and quality of life.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that decreased lot sizes can lead to increased urban heat, reduced privacy, and higher noise levels among other issues. As concerned residents of West Jordan, it's imperative that we act now to ensure our community maintains its unique identity and continues to be an attractive place for families to grow and prosper.

I urge city planners and local government officials to consider the full impact of changing these zoning regulations and to prioritize long-term community welfare over short-term gains. Let us work together to maintain the neighborhood we all cherish.

Please sign this petition to keep the lot sizes at 10,000 square feet at the old West Jordan Elementary School site and support a future that all West Jordan residents can be proud of.

The council knows about this and understands how the residents feel. I do not want higher density in this area either. I will be attending Ivorys open house on Thursday and it sounds like the residents also want a town hall to discuss. Thanks for letting me know about the petition. Chad Lamb
