Maintain Full Access with a Center Turn Lane on 92 Highway
The Issue
My business, Jackson Animal Clinic, stands as the only veterinary service in Platte City and the sole provider of large animal veterinary services in Platte County. The proposed design for the new 4-lane highway along 92 Highway threatens to disrupt the vital access to these crucial services that local residents rely upon. This disruption isn't just an inconvenience; it poses a significant risk to the livelihood of my business and those of other long-standing small businesses in the community.
Currently, the design includes a median curb, which will considerably limit the accessibility and convenience for our clients. This planned median not only disrupts the easy flow of traffic but also hinders the economic vibrancy of our area. The value of impacted real estate is predicted to decline, and the growth and success of established small businesses will be stifled. It is crucial to consider the broader implications of such a design on the local economy and community well-being.
Jackson Animal Clinic isn't alone; several other businesses operating along 92 Highway will face similar challenges. This includes Willow Woods Learning Center, Autism Support Now, Goodman's Auto Repair, Commercial Concrete Solutions, and Platte City Self Storage. These businesses have served our community for many years, contributing significantly to the local economy and providing indispensable services. A restrictive access design will curb customer flow, affect revenue generation, and may eventually lead to closures.
In place of a median curb, we propose the implementation of a center turn lane. This alternative will maintain full access to businesses and homes, ensuring that all entities can continue to thrive. With plans already including improved grading, better line of sight, and reduced speed limits, a center turn lane is a safe and more efficient improvement. It provides the opportunity for vehicles to turn left at key points without obstructing ongoing traffic, thus preserving the accessibility for our clients and community residents. During periods of high traffic volume, drivers will have the flexability to use the roundabouts if using the center lane is challenging.
We urge the responsible planning authorities to critically reassess the current highway design. Your action will safeguard local businesses and bolster economic growth in Platte City and Platte County. Please consider the adoption of a center turn lane for 92 Highway that supports both traffic efficiency and community welfare.
