The Issue

My name is Trinity, and I've been a resident of Medford for over ten years. As someone who walks and bikes around town, I have a deep appreciation for the current layout of our downtown streets, bicycle lanes, and sidewalks. They provide a safe and accessible way for people who don’t own cars or prefer other methods to get around. This is especially crucial for the many college students in the area who rely on walking and biking to commute to campus and around our beautiful city.

Recently, proposals have surfaced to alter the existing infrastructure in downtown Medford. While change and development can be positive, these particular changes threaten to disrupt the safe and efficient pathways that we’ve come to rely on. Our community currently enjoys a well-balanced blend of vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic, and any major alterations could jeopardize this hard-earned harmony.

According to city data, over 30% of Medford residents use bicycles or walking as their primary mode of transportation. This statistic is especially significant given the high number of students and environmentally conscious individuals living here. Our current street layout has been essential in maintaining traffic safety, reducing congestion, and lowering our carbon footprint. It's not just about convenience; it's about preserving the character and accessibility of our community.

Instead of overhauling the existing infrastructure, we propose that the city council engage with community members to explore enhancements that preserve the integrity of our beloved streets while meeting the future needs of a growing town. By focusing on maintenance and minor improvements, Medford can continue to be a leader in sustainable urban development without losing the qualities that make it unique.

We call upon the City of Medford to maintain the downtown street, bicycle lane, and sidewalk layout for the next ten years. This thoughtful pause will allow us to more thoroughly assess and plan for changes that genuinely benefit our entire community. Protecting our current infrastructure will ensure Medford remains a safe and inviting place for everyone.

Join us in standing up for the streets and pathways that have served us so well. Please sign this petition to keep Medford's downtown layout intact for the next decade! Together, we can make our voices heard and keep Medford moving in the right direction.
