Maintain Chinook Channel

The Issue

The Chinook Channel has long been a vital artery for local fishermen, companies, and recreational boaters. However, its current depth poses significant hazards. Shallow waters in the channel have been linked to an increase in boating accidents, grounding incidents, personal injury and costly damages to vessels. These incidents not only pose risks to personal safety but also disrupt the flow of commerce and limit recreational boating activities essential to our community's way of life.

In summary. Lack of maintenance and funding allocations from the Federal government cannot be allowed to be responsible for our economic hardships and hazardous conditions.

To address this, I am gathering the signatures of all people who have been negatively impacted ( and supporters ) by the shallow depths and lack of adequate maintenance dredging in the Chinook Channel.

When you sign this petition you help strengthen the advocacy effort to ensure greater and ongoing dredging of the federal navigation channel to the Port of Chinook.

The Decision Makers

Jeff Wilson
Washington State Senate - District 19
Responded
Thank you to each one of you for voicing your concerns regarding the shallow depths and lack of adequate maintenance dredging in the Port of Chinook. Like you, I am concerned by this issue and as the Longview Port Commissioner I am particularly aware of the impact this can have on the local economy and personal safety. The Chinook Channel has an important role to play in the region, whether that’s supporting tourism or creating jobs. In the last session I worked with Commissioners at the Port of Chinook to secure $515,000 for a marina dredge. While the issue of maintenance dredging is primarily tied to federal funding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as your State Senator I look forward to advocating for you. I hope that each one of you will contact me at jeff.wilson@leg.wa.gov or 360-786-7636 to schedule a meeting to discuss possible solutions. Senator Jeff Wilson
