MAINE to adopt DRUG INDUCED HOMICIDE to charge dealers if their drugs kills someone.
MAINE to adopt DRUG INDUCED HOMICIDE to charge dealers if their drugs kills someone.
The Issue
DRUG INDUCED HOMICIDE
As part of the efforts to end the opiate epidemic here in Maine, dealers who give a fatal dose of drugs must be charged with homicide. With fentanyl permeating our state and added to EVERY drug kind of drug that is sold, we need to.ACT NOW! In Maine we've had pill press machines for more than two years that produce pills that look exactly like the "real" percocet, xanax, oxycodone, etc. including the color and the stamping of each pill. Sometimes fillers are added to fentanyl to produce these pills and sometimes the pills contain 100% fentanyl, which is 50 to 100 times stronger than pure morphine.
For example, if you were to cut a baby aspirin into 325 equal parts, just one piece of fentanyl the size of that 1/325th piece of baby aspirin is enough to kill a someone.
All over the United States there are more younger people dying from these pills. Young people who are experimenting and are not necessarily addicts are "trying" drugs. Many times they are buying and ingesting just one "percocet" or "xanax" and they immediately begin to overdose and they die.
If we were to charge the "small time" local dealers with homicide, when one of their pills or drug mixtures kills someone, we would then begin to see those "out of state" and local dealers who carry large amounts of fake pills, and heroin, cocaine, and even marijuana laced with fentanyl come out of "hiding", and have to do their own dealing. When someone inevitably dies from these drugs, the charge would be Homicide.
Those who die from overdoses make the choice to take a drug; they do NOT choose to die. My daughter, Lexi chose to buy and injest a drug she bought from a high school "friend". It contained Fentanyl and my beautiful 28 year old daughter died five days later. Her "friend" has not been charged, nor has he been brought in for questioning despite the revealing text messages that are in the posession of the Brunswick Police Department. It will be four years on September 21, 2021 since she was poisoned. This is unacceptable. And this "friend" continues to peddle his drugs.
A charge of "Drug Induced Homicide" would take many dealers off our streets and then deter more "small time" dealers from taking the chance of being charged with Homicide vs Trafficking, which carries an approximate two year sentence here in Maine. This would show dealers that the price of killing another carries a harsh punishment and show our Maine citizens just how huge this epidemic actually is in our state. There is an abundance of deadly drugs peddled in our neighborhoods, grocery stores, shopping centers and convenience store parking lots, etc.
More people, mainly our kids will understand the importance of not ever "trying" any drug:
"NOT EVEN ONCE!"
We can prevent addiction BEFORE our children are even tempted to "try" drugs and alcohol. The days of believing "it's normal to experiment" are gone. Today, that cannot be normal because addiction and death are the REAL possibilities for our children.
Please, sign this petition and show our citizens that they matter more than the drug dealers who kill our loved ones.
