Help Independent Workers in Maine
The Issue
We are writing this letter as a group of independent contractors, service industry workers, and artists. These workers:
1. Are not protected by the unemployment laws that protect employees of small or large businesses
2. Do not have the opportunity to work from home
3. Are not eligible for the SBA grants and loans that will cover small businesses with employees
4. Often do not have, and are not eligible for assistance with, healthcare insurance.
In the coming months, workers will not be able to pay rent, car loans, student loans.
The state has always expressed pride in its entrepreneurs while leaving it up to sole proprietors to figure out how to operate safely and efficiently. We are now calling on the government to provide tangible supports for these independent workers.
1. Stricter guidelines about closures and social distancing to slow the spread of this virus so that the effects aren't even longer lasting.
2. A list of resources that are, or will be, available to individual workers, including immediate options for financial support.
We understand this is a quickly evolving situation, and appreciate the actions already being taken. Thank you for your consideration of the needs laid out in this letter.
Sincerely,
Maine Workers
