Reduce the speed limit on the Canal Rocks Rd section of Caves Road Yallingup!

The issue

The section of Caves road in Yallingup from the intersection of Gunyulgup Road to the southern end of the Yallingup Steiner school is a particularly hazardous piece of road.

There are three roads (Gunyulgup, Canal Rocks & Wildwood Roads) intersecting Caves Road over a short distance as well as a hill and a blind corner. A group of concerned residents, business owners and parents have joined forces to approach Main Roads about reducing the speed limit and/or adopting other techniques to reduce the speed of drivers in that section.

Many of us have had close calls in this section of road and below is a comment by one of the local police officers recently:

"I am just waiting for there to be a bad accident in that section of road...Many drivers speed in that section, and often they are not local so are unfamiliar with the road."

In this small area we have a cafe, two wineries, a gallery, accommodation, houses, AND A SCHOOL backing onto this road and still it remains an 80km zone!

At what point would Main Roads consider this to be a large enough hub to warrant a speed limit reduction? Current population growth predictions would suggest that this road, like many in the South West is only going to become busier, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

This petition aims to highlight the level of concern that the surrounding community has about this section of road. We suggest that the speed limit be reduced to 60 kms per hour in this section of Caves Road. We believe that unless action is taken, it will only be a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.
