The ecological park, developed by Madurai Corporation near adjoining the corporation building, which is spread in 5.5 acres of land was constructed in two phases. It was opened for the public after the inauguration of works in the second phase in the year 2004. The park was set up at a cost of Rs.40 lakh. Boating facility in a concrete tank, illuminated optic fibre trees and fountains are the attractive features of the park.

 

The sprawling eco park with lush green cover which is open only during the mornings and evenings was a most preferred place for walkers as it has a 2.5-km walking track. It has 124 varieties of herbal trees and more than 500 varieties of small and big shade giving trees. It houses an artificial fountain established at a cost of Rs.13 lakhs which pumps water up to 110 feet

Since the park was established in one of the important places of the city, it attracts a large number of people. In due course of time, the park started losing its sheen due to slackness in the maintenance. If maintained properly it could draw a large number of tourists in the city which has limited places of tourist attraction. It could also boost the corporation’s revenue. It also provides economical support to large number of people who are engaged in road side vending.

 

An effective renovation plan must be sketched in order to revive the main tourist attraction of the city.
