On October 1, 2021, Profe Deana Zorko, a Spanish teacher at West High School, announced to her classes that it would be her last day.

As of October 1st, the school district is no longer allowing Ms. Zorko to teach her Spanish classes at West High School. Despite the fact that there is no one able to properly replace Profe Zorko, the district went ahead with this decision. Since the beginning of the year, Ms. Zorko has taught Spanish 4 and AP Spanish Literature classes via Zoom every day and has had a long-term, retired substitute (non Spanish speaking) teacher, Mr. Lyne, assisting in running the class and operating the Zoom meeting. She is using this teaching approach because she is immunocompromised. Despite having been vaccinated against COVID-19 three times, her doctors say she is still at high risk for contracting a fatal case of the virus. While the situation of Ms. Zorko teaching online was not ideal for neither her nor her classes, many students preferred this teaching style to the one imposed after her departure. She has gone above and beyond to come up with creative solutions to make teaching virtually work for her students. 

Not to mention, Ms. Zorko has many years of experience and has been nationally recognized as Teacher of the Year by the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Moreover, Ms. Zorko is the only teacher who is qualified in the district to teach AP Spanish Literature, as there is a special certification needed to teach it. MMSD decided-- with no student input-- that leaving her classes of dedicated and passionate students with no teacher was a better option than continuing to work with an extremely qualified and experienced virtual one. This decision was not "student centered" and will be damaging to our education. 

We understand that this is a complicated issue and the district’s reasoning for wanting all students and staff to uniformly return to in-person learning. However, the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t disappeared and the district should accommodate teachers just as they do students. These are unprecedented times, but forcing Ms. Zorko to make an impossible choice between her health and her passion for teaching is not representative of the flexibility and accommodation the district has been advocating for throughout the pandemic.

El día 1 de octubre de 2021, la profesora Deana Zorko, una profesora de Español en West High School, anunció a sus clases que sería su último día enseñando. A partir del día 1 de octubre, el distrito paró de permitir que la Sra. Zorko enseñará sus clases de Español 4 y Cultura y Literatura AP en West High School a menos que arriesgara su vida para regresar a la escuela en persona. Desde el comienzo del año, la Sra. Zorko ha enseñado sus clases de Español 4 y Literatura en Español AP a través de la reunión de Zoom todos los días, y ha tenido un maestro sustituto y jubilado (que no habla español) a largo plazo, el Sr. Lyne, que la ayudó a coordinar la clase y la reunión de Zoom. Además la Será. Zorko es la única maestra en MMSD que está calificada para enseñar Literatura en Español AP, ya que se necesita una certificación especial para enseñarla. Para añadir, no hay sustitutos que hablan Español disponibles en todo el distrito para enseñar adecuadamente cualquiera de sus clases. De todas maneras, MMSD tomó esta decisión sin comunicarse con los estudiantes. Creando una situación en que los estudiantes dedicados y apasionados se han quedado sin profesora. Obviamente, esta decisión no fue centrada en la “educación del estudiante" y es perjudicial para nuestra educación.

Entendemos que este es un tema complicado y que el distrito quiere que todos los estudiantes y los profesores regresen uniformemente al aprendizaje en persona. Pero, el hecho de que no haya un reemplazo adecuado para la Sra. Zorko debería ser razón suficiente para que el distrito haga una excepción, especialmente en circunstancias excepcionales. Estos son tiempos difíciles y obligar a la Sra. Zorko a hacer una decisión imposible entre su salud y su pasión por enseñar no representa la flexibilidad y acomodación que el distrito ha estado defendiendo durante la pandemia.
