The Issue

I am a survivor of sexual assault and domestic violence. My abuser confessed to what he did, and I even have text messages where he apologized for hurting me that night. He also has a documented history of domestic violence. Despite this, Madison County ignored my report. When I reached out to the District Attorney, I was dismissed and told it was just a "he said, she said." Even my victim advocate from Every Survivor Counts in Wood River was hung up on when she tried to call on my behalf.

Unfortunately, my story is not unique. Countless victims in Madison County face similar dismissals and lack of adequate support when they step forward to report domestic violence and sexual assault incidents. This failure in our justice system not only discourages victims from coming forward but also emboldens perpetrators to continue their abuse without fear of being held accountable.

Madison County needs a comprehensive overhaul of its approach to handling domestic violence cases. We call for:

1.  A comprehensive review of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault cases and take action to bring abusers to justice.  Any survivor who calls to ask for a case review should be granted one.

2. Transparent prosecution rated for domestic violence and sexual assault cases.

3. A victim centered policy that prioritizes survivor safety.

4. Accountability for offenders who commit abuse.

We cannot allow the perpetuation of a cycle where victims feel let down by the very systems meant to protect them. It simply isn't enough to just "believe" victims—we need to back that belief with tangible action and systemic change.

Please sign this petition to demand that Madison County re-evaluates and improves its treatment of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Together, we can create a safer community for all.
