The Pryor Brown Garage on Church Street was originally constructed in 1925 and is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the few structures of its type and age still existing in the United States and it is a shining example of how mixed-use garages can add to the vibrancy of downtown by including street-level retails spaces. The current owner, Mike Conley, has applied for and received a demolition permit from the City of Knoxville to destroy the building even though his plans to create a block-sized asphalt parking lot in its place were denied by MPC and City Council. We call upon Mayor Madeline Rogero and the Knoxville City Council to proactively work with the owner to find an alternative to the demolition and immediately submit an application for Historic Overlay Zoning on the property. These actions might well save the building and will communicate to the public and property owners that historic buildings are vitally important to the future of downtown and will be protected by this administration and city council.
