The Issue

My husband and I are long-time Macy’s shoppers, and we love the progressive values Macy’s has as a company -- particularly their stance on LGBT equality. Which is why I was so disappointed when, on a recent trip to my local Macy’s, I discovered that Macy’s still has locations where baby changing tables are only available in the women’s restrooms. Even more surprising, this is also true for their men’s clothing stores.

Can you believe it? I couldn’t.

As a dad and a gay man I am upset that Macy’s would send a message saying that in 2015 it is still a woman’s job to take care of children, and that gay parents, single dads, and fathers in general are not deserving of equal facilities.

Now, I want to believe that Macy's isn't purposely being sexist or homophobic, but people shouldn't be forced to change their children in the backseat of their cars because a department store doesn't provide equal access to facilities. The reality is, families today are very diverse. More and more men are choosing to become stay-at-home dads, there are approximately 1 million families with two dads in the U.S., and nearly 2.5 million single fathers. Companies should be supporting all the parents that shop at their stores equally -- no matter their gender.

Luckily, there is an easy way for Macy’s to fix this: they can make it their official company policy to provide universally accessible changing tables, either by installing them in both the women’s and men’s rooms, or by providing family restrooms in their stores.

Macy's, let us know that you support all families by allowing equal access to changing facilities in all of your stores!
