Keep MGSM operating as an Independent Business School

The Issue

It has been announced that MGSM will cease to exist by the end of November 2017.

Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor has controversial decision to dissolve MGSM fully into the university Faculty of Business and Economics (FB&E) - without proper consultation of Alumni, nor consideration of the impacts to Alumni, current or future students.

Business schools, which have their branding and reputation closely tied to their independent status, are highly valued by alumni. As such, there is little point in risking that by merging. In 2011, MGSM, like the MBS, rejected a merger with parent university Macquarie for this reason.

"The value in MGSM staying independent was too important to risk" was the view of former MGSM Dean Robert Widing, in 2011.

This petition is on behalf of MGSM Alumni, staff and Academics, to address the Macquarie University Council to overturn this decision and protect the reputation of MGSM.

MGSM is rated by The Financial Times as #1 management school in Australia, and #49 globally - whilst Macquarie University is #12 in Australia and #240 in the world QS ranking.

Retaining independence is critical to MGSM remaining the Number 1 ranked management school in Australia, to preserve brand recognition, market performance, international recognition and rankings, and to preserve the value of the MBA's we have all invested so heavily in.

Update: As you sign the petition, I encourage you to also comment as to your reasons for support and thoughts on the matter. Thank you.
