Petition Description

There is no doubt that climate change will impact most sectors of society, some sectors are already impacted. There is also no doubt that to find solutions and/or adapt to the current environmental collapse, we need people with the right knowledge and skills. University students are for the large part, the ones that will have access to positions of power and will need to adapt to and address climate change related challenges. Yet, at Maastricht University, many students graduate without sufficient knowledge on climate change and sustainability. This has to change. Our education must be adapted to today’s reality and meet the needs of tomorrow's society. 

If you also believe knowledge about sustainability and climate change are crucial in addressing the current crisis, please sign the petition and share it among your peers! 

Why mandatory?

We believe that Maastricht University, as an educational body, has the responsibility to provide basic knowledge about sustainability to all its students. No matter their studies, every student should be aware of what climate change and sustainability entail. Because we require an education that reflects the reality of the world, S4C is actively pushing for the development of a mandatory sustainability course relevant to every student.

Why interfaculty?

This course will serve as a basis for all students coming to Maastricht University to study. It will introduce them to many aspects of sustainability. Whatever study anyone decides to join, they will receive the same sustainable education and awareness as any other UM student. All the faculties will be embodied in that course in order to make sure it is accessible and relevant to all, meaning that for example topics like environmental law, sustainable economy, social and health aspects will be discussed.

 

What has been done until now?

Many professors are working with us on this and have put a lot of work in trying to create a course that is relevant for all faculties. However, the administration does not support us yet, and that is why we need to show that it is not just us.

Why are we doing a petition?

By signing this petition, you will not only show your support for this project, but also put more pressure on the University to provide more sustainability education! We need to show the administration and executive board that there is a wide demand for this course and that it is time their curriculum matches the reality of today’s and tomorrow’s world!

Het staat vast dat de klimaatverandering gevolgen zal hebben in de meeste sectoren van onze samenleving; sommige sectoren ondervinden nu al de gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Het staat ook vast dat we mensen met de juiste kennis en vaardigheden nodig hebben om oplossingen te vinden en/of ons aan te passen aan de huidige ineenstorting van het milieu. Universiteitsstudenten zijn voor het grootste deel jongeren die toegang zullen hebben tot machtsposities. Ze maken deel uit van de mensen zich zullen moeten aanpassen aan de uitdagingen die de opwarming van de Aarde naar voren brengt, en deze problemen te moeten overwinnen. Toch studeren vele jongeren aan de Universiteit Maastricht af zonder voldoende kennis over klimaatverandering en duurzaamheid. Dat moet veranderen. Ons onderwijs moet worden aangepast aan de omstandigheden van vandaag, én voldoen aan de behoeften van de samenleving van morgen. 

Als u ook denkt dat kennis over duurzaamheid en klimaatverandering essentieel is voor de aanpak van de huidige situatie, teken dan de petitie en deel deze met uw medestudenten! 

Waarom verplicht?

Wij zijn van mening dat de Universiteit Maastricht als onderwijsinstelling de verantwoordelijkheid heeft om basiskennis over duurzaamheid aan al haar studenten te verstrekken. Ongeacht hun studie zou iedere student zich bewust moeten zijn van wat klimaatverandering en duurzaamheid met zich meebrengen. Omdat we een opleiding nodig hebben die de realiteit van onze wereld weergeeft, zet S4C zich actief in voor de ontwikkeling van een verplichte duurzaamheidscursus die van belang is voor iedere student.

Waarom interfacultair?

Deze cursus zal als basis dienen voor alle studenten die naar de Universiteit Maastricht komen. Het zal hen in aanraking brengen met belangrijke duurzaamheidsaspecten. Ongeacht de studie die iemand besluit te volgen, krijgt hij/zij dezelfde duurzame opleiding en bewustmaking als elke andere UM-student. Alle faculteiten zullen in die opleiding worden geïntegreerd om ervoor te zorgen dat deze voor iedereen toegankelijk en relevant is. Dit betekent dat diverse onderwerpen zoals bijvoorbeeld milieurecht, duurzame economie, sociale en gezondheidsaspecten aan de orde zullen komen.

Wat is er tot nu toe gedaan?

Vele professoren werken hier samen met ons aan en hebben veel moeite gedaan om een cursus te ontwerpen die relevant is voor alle faculteiten. De administratie steunt ons echter nog niet, daarom moeten we laten zien dat het niet alleen om ons gaat.

Waarom doen we een petitie?

Door deze petitie te ondertekenen, laat u niet alleen uw steun zien voor dit project, maar zet u ook meer druk op de universiteit om ons duurzamer onderwijs te geven! We moeten de administratie en het bestuur duidelijk maken dat er een sterke vraag is naar deze cursus. Ze moeten begrijpen dat het tijd is hun curriculum te aan te passen in tijden van een veranderende wereld.
