Honey was purchased from a Pets at Home store on 24th of July. Please read what happened in the words of her owner.
‘Hi there, I read your story about Stella. My family and I were completely selfish and decided to go buy a rabbit from pets at home because this little girl caught our eye and instead of adopting we just decided to buy our rabbit since we were in love with her. She was extremely underweight when we bought her but I thought we could ‘rescue’ her and bring her weight back up. The first night she was barely eating. Like literally maybe one or two bits of hay. I was concerned but thought she might be stressed and I didn’t know if she was eating in her hiding spot when we were asleep but I thought I’d keep an eye on her just in case. I kept waking up every hour the first night to check on her and she was sat in between her food bowls the entire night, not lying down but just sitting. The next day my partner and my mum were at work so it was just me and Honey. And she was really quiet, didn’t mind being lifted up but it was quite concerning because there was nothing ‘rabbit’ about her. She was way too calm for a rabbit and was quite zombie like. Every hour she would run around for about 15 minutes and then just sit in the corner. Then she ended up getting diarrhoea and I rushed her to the vets. They did say she was underweight and her temperature was really low. So they kept her in for a few hours and I was so upset and crying hoping she would survive as they did say she might not make it as she’s so young and weak. Then they phoned me and said we could come and collect her as she’s back to eating and she’s starting to be normal again. So that night everything was going well. She was starting to run around and was eating a bit more and her droppings were looking normal. She was more lively and actually cleaning herself as well. Although we had to give her lots of medication but it was going well. The day after she was okay but then around 3pm she started acting weird again and wanted to hide and seemed off. I was so worried. But then she went to sleep for an hour and then that’s when she died. The vets was Vets4Pets that was attached to pets at home. She started crying out, like a very quiet cry and that’s how I knew. I grabbed her and we headed straight to the vets and when she had died in my arms we tried everything to bring her back but it didn’t work. Vets4Pets tried bringing her back as well but it was too late. We bought her on the 24th and she died the 26th of July. We only had her for two days but we fell so in love with her. It’s been two weeks but i still break down when I think about it. It has scarred me. Pets at home refunded us absolutely everything and they paid for the post-mortem and they’re paying for her urn. I’ve yet to hear back from them for the results to why she died. I can’t even describe the pain of losing her. But I’ve learned my lesson and I’ll definitely NEVER shop in pets at home again or shop anywhere for an animal. Everyone NEEDS to know that you should adopt instead. I hope my little Honey is finally happy and not in any pain. I thought I’d share this story as I know more and more people are saying the same thing so I hope to tell mine also.
'I just got off the phone to the vets as every day I’ve been phoning for her results. They said the results have just came through and her intestines were really inflamed and her liver was effecting it as her guts were loaded and sending the stuff back into her liver? I’m really upset right now and they said a lot of words that I didn’t know obviously as I’m not a vet but so what I definitely know now is that it isn’t my fault and I don’t know why pets at home would sell us an ill bunny. I’d just like to think though we made her last few days happy.’
‘She wasn’t chipped when we got her. We were definitely told she was 6-9 weeks but looked 6 weeks cos of how small she was. I wouldn’t want anyone going through what we went through as it was traumatising.’
The post-mortem revealed that Honey had coccidiosis. She only weighed 560g.
Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of animals caused by coccidian protozoa. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces or ingestion of infected tissue. Diarrhea, which may become bloody in severe cases, is the primary symptom. Coccidiosis is common in intensive breeding facilities.
Hundreds of people have shared similar heartbreaking stories after purchasing a rabbit from Pets at Home. The ones that we share seem to be the tip of the iceberg.
Don’t let this happen to you. Don’t let it happen to them.
Boycott shops that sell pets.
