Open the elementary school in Munster,ON
The Issue
Our children are not immune to Covid-19. They need to social distance as well.
The current plan for elementary school students in OCDSB school zone 1 is to return to full classrooms, and thus makes parents feel very uneasy. If any parent has asthma, any autoimmune disorder, the list does on and on, they can’t send their kids back to a full classroom of 25+ students which are only encouraged to wear a mask!
It seems a very important part of the sick kids return to school recommendations were ignored:
“Smaller class sizes should be a priority strategy as it will aid in physical distancing and reduce potential spread from any index case. Several jurisdictions have reopened schools with maximum class sizes ranging from 10-15.56 However, there is limited evidence on which to base
a pre-specified class size. Decisions should take into account the available classroom space in addition to the number of exposures that would occur should a student or staff test positive.
• Where needed, the use of non-traditional spaces should be explored to accommodate smaller classes in order to allow daily school attendance. This may necessitate additional teacher/educational resources.”
We need to make smaller, more manageable student cohorts. We need more classrooms. We need to tighten up our communities, lesson travel between them. We have schools available in the district. Let’s use them!
Note: The other issue that this would resolve is the congestion being seen in Glen Cairn elementary schools. If Munster reopened, this would leave space in Stittsville schools to recieve Stittsville students going to John Young etc.
