The Luxemburg-Casco school board held a special board meeting Wednesday, May 5th. The first of the two actions the board took was; effective immediately, to return to pre COVID-19 rules with masks being optional in all cases. This means that any staff or student who has been quarantined because of being a close contact may return to school. Any student or staff member who has a fever or has been vomiting can return after 24 hours of no fever and/or vomiting. This means that a student or staff can test positive for COVID-19 and go to school without a mask on as long as they aren’t fevering or vomiting. Some common symptoms of COVID-19 are a loss of taste and/or smell. With the pre COVID-19 rules put into place by the school board, students and staff members can attend school without a mask on not only with COVID-19 symptoms but also testing positive. Also, there is no longer any close contact tracing.

When this action was implemented on May 5th, it was exactly 21 days away from graduation and 29 days until the end of the original 2020-2021 academic school year. Spring sports are experiencing postponed games and meets along with the rejection of participation at regionals, sectionals, and state through the WIAA. An end of the year choir concert may never occur— along with the possibility of not being able to have a graduation ceremony.
