Remove the Howdah from Lucy the Elephant (Margate NJ)

Remove the Howdah from Lucy the Elephant (Margate NJ)
The Issue
It’s time to remove the Howdah (saddle) from Lucy’s back because it promotes animal abuse.
Howdahs, the carriage on the back of an elephant, can cause permanent damage to an elephant’s spine, shortening their lifespan. Howdahs and elephant riding in general are widely condemned by animal rights groups, but unfortunately it is still practiced in many parts of the world today. The largest Howdah in the world is sadly here in Margate, on the back of Lucy the Elephant. Though Lucy is not a live elephant, her carrying a Howdah normalizes its use on live elephants, significantly reducing the quality of life for thousands of these beautiful creatures. When we remove the Howdah off Lucy, we not only relieve the burden for her but send a symbol to the world calling for humane treatment of elephants everywhere.
